Serums and oils tend to look very similar, but they both actually feel and behave differently. The one thing they do have in common, however, is that they both harness powerful active ingredients to boost and benefit your skin. Read on to find out how they’re different and why you need both!

First things first, what's the difference?

Serums are highly concentrated light-weight formulas, usually based in water or other water soluble carriers (usually appearing more like a gel). They contain high levels of active ingredients, and are usually more readily absorbed into the skin, making them ideal for rectifying more specific skin conditions.

Facial oils are typically used to soften and condition the skin. They work by strengthening and deeply nourishing the outer layer of your skin by softening and sealing it, helping to maintain hydration to prevent water loss as well as delivering active ingredients to the skin to support skin renewal.

Which should I use?

When using facial serums and oils, the level of active and nutrient-rich ingredients is extremely important as these are the keys to addressing your skincare concerns (from pigmentation and sun-spots, through to fine lines and wrinkles).

At Shawelle, both our Active Serum and Power Oil have been carefully curated using only the best and most powerful ingredients. The base of our Active Serum is aloe vera (not water.) Well known for its soothing and healing properties we ensure that even the carriers of our products offer seriously magical benefits.

Our Active Serum is a unique formulation containing both Kakadu Plum, boasting the highest concentration of Vitamin C in the world, and Mount Pepper Leaf, rated as the world’s most potent antioxidant. These, along side many other unique, native-Australian botanicals, are used to detoxify and hydrate skin at a deep cellular level.

The Power Oil is a rich blend of Vitamins C and E, Omega 6 and 9 and polyphenols, delivering important nourishment to the skin but also giving you that essential glow. A simpler way to explain this is to imagine the bursting benefits of a nutrient packed super-smoothie just for your skin... We’ve blended native Australian oil extracts such as Rosehip, Sandalwood and Rosella flower (to name a few) with award-winning peptides into our luxurious, soothing and restorative evening oil.

When should I use them?

We recommend using Active Serum in the morning to maximise the antioxidant properties, which help to fight against day-to-day free radicals produced from general air pollution, UV rays, smoke, etc. forever circulating in the atmosphere and consequently upsetting our skin. Active Serum is especially good for tired, stressed skin in need of a boost, as well as offering a brighter, smoother complexion addressing pigmentation, visible age spots and fine lines.

The Power Oil facial oil has been created for evening use, when your body and skin move into restore and rejuvenate mode! A great way to anchor and restore your skin overnight while you sleep, Power Oil is especially good for dry, sensitive and dehydrated skin.

The verdict?

All in all, your skin is exposed to different stressors on a daily basis, from UV damage, heat and weather to pollution, bacteria and more. By incorporating a nourishing and active-ingredient rich serum and oil to your skincare routine you can help boost and enhance your skin, aiding in the natural processes of detoxification, repair and rejuvenation.
